Shared value seeks to expand the size of the total economic pool instead of fighting for market share within it. By connecting a company’s success with societal improvement, new ways to serve and expand markets are conceived, resulting in efficiencies, long-term differentiation and higher ROI (Porter and Kramer, 2011).

Changes to the BEE charter put forward by the DTI are immanent. It is therefore not enough to be compliant with old legislation, BEE is an iterative process that will increasingly become a fundamental tenant of doing business in South Africa. Therefore, BEE should not be seen as a function of compliance, but rather a mechanism for creating competitive advantage and local differentiation.
